On 24–25 September, CO2 PACMAN was presented to the public through the participation of two project partners, the University of Siena (UNISI) in Italy and GEOIMAGING in Cyprus, in Bright-Night – Researchers’ Night, an initiative bringing science and research closer to citizens through interactive activities and public engagement.

The University of Siena: discovering decarbonisation through play

On 24–25 September, the University of Siena, Lead Partner of the CO2 PACMAN project, took part in Bright-Night – Researchers’ Night in Siena with a dedicated CO2 PACMAN stand.

Visitors had the opportunity to discover the project and explore the CO2 PACMAN Cool Game, a board game developed within the project to make complex environmental data more accessible and engaging. Through play, younger generations could explore the challenges of decarbonisation and gain a better understanding of the links between human activities, emissions and the environment.

The activity provided an opportunity to present CO2 PACMAN’s approach in an accessible and interactive way, encouraging dialogue between scientific research and the wider community.

GEOIMAGING: exploring CO2 PACMAN scenarios through VR

In Cyprus, GEOIMAGING participated in Researchers’ Night on 25 September at the Cyprus State Exhibition Centre, presenting CO2 PACMAN’s design scenarios developed for the project’s three pilot islands.

The GEOIMAGING stand featured posters showcasing one scenario from each pilot island: agrivoltaics in Brač, floating photovoltaics in Crete, and photovoltaics at a former mine in Elba. Visitors could also experience the corresponding scenarios through virtual reality (VR), providing an immersive way to explore how different solutions can contribute to the decarbonisation of Mediterranean island territories.

Around 40 visitors attended the GEOIMAGING stand, with particularly strong curiosity and enthusiasm among younger participants.

Bringing science closer to citizens

Through their participation in Bright-Night – Researchers’ Night, UNISI and GEOIMAGING demonstrated how CO2 PACMAN’s research, tools and scenarios can be communicated beyond the scientific community and made accessible to a broader audience.

From an interactive board game in Siena to immersive VR experiences in Cyprus, the two initiatives highlighted the project’s commitment to engaging citizens, sharing knowledge and encouraging a better understanding of possible pathways towards decarbonisation in Mediterranean islands.
