3rd rooting LAB Elba Island

17/12/2024

CO2 PACMAN: COoperation and CO-designing PArtnership for CliMAte Neutrality, Rooting Lab in Portoferraio (Elba) from 11 – 13 February 2025

The CO2 PACMAN Rooting Lab is coming to Elba, in Portoferraio, from February 11th to 12th, 2025 and in Florence on 13th February. After the successful editions held on the island of Brač and in Crete, the Elba Lab marks the final event in the first round of Rooting Labs, which will be followed by a second round of Rooting Labs on the same target islands. As a three-day workshop, the Elba Rooting Lab aims to foster cooperation between project partners and local stakeholders by focusing on research, data collection, knowledge exchange, and co-creating solutions for decarbonization.

Rooting Labs are structured as dynamic, hands-on workshops in selected pilot islands, combining collaborative and interactive sessions. These sessions bring together public authorities, businesses, citizens, and other stakeholders to conduct onsite investigations, exchange knowledge, and design practical solutions. The Elba Lab will emphasize increasing knowledge and awareness to advance the transition to climate neutrality, taking into account the unique challenges and opportunities of the island.

The activities within this first round of Rooting Labs are designed to broaden the scope of possible solutions across various sectors: renewable energy (including blue energy), sustainable mobility, waste and water management, food supply chains, low-carbon industries, ecosystem-based solutions, and sustainable tourism. These workshops are crucial for producing a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) balance for the pilot islands while providing insights into their transition pathways.

CO2 PACMAN places particular importance on engaging local communities through interactive labs, co-creation workshops, and ongoing dialogue. This participatory approach has already proven effective in Brač and Crete, where diverse stakeholders collaborated to create tailored action plans. The exchange of ideas and shared decision-making processes have resulted in concrete strategies aligned with the specific needs of each community.

The Elba Rooting Lab represents an opportunity to connect with local public administrations, students, businesses, and citizens. These stakeholders will not only gain insights into the project’s goals and the concept of carbon neutrality but will also play a pivotal role in shaping the roadmap for a sustainable future.

By leveraging the complementary expertise of project partners and stakeholders, this lab aims to promote a holistic and collaborative approach to climate neutrality. Together, we’ll take another step toward a low-carbon, resilient Mediterranean.
