What happens when support for stakeholders doesn’t stop when one European project ends, but continues into the next?

12/10/2026

A journey from BLUE DEAL, an Interreg MED project, through its Open Innovation Challenge, to the CO2 PACMAN project.

The new energy-producing floating dock on Giglio Island, Italy, is an inspiring example of how European cooperation can generate lasting impact.

Developed by SEARES in collaboration with the Municipality of Giglio, the innovative floating dock combines solar and wave energy to generate renewable electricity. With an estimated capacity of 5.2 kW, it integrates walkable photovoltaic panels and hydrodynamic systems to support dockside services and boat battery charging.

What makes this achievement particularly significant is that the connection between SEARES and the Municipality of Giglio originated within the BLUE DEAL Interreg MED project, through its Open Innovation Challenge, “Giglio Island: Let Blue Energy Bloom.” The initiative brought together local authorities and innovative businesses to explore practical Blue Energy solutions.

The story did not end with BLUE DEAL. Its Open Innovation approach was further developed and capitalised on through CO2 PACMAN, demonstrating how knowledge, methodologies and stakeholder relationships can be transferred and strengthened across European projects.

The Giglio Island initiative highlights the importance of capitalisation: building on existing achievements, connecting stakeholders and transforming innovation into tangible, long-term impact.
