The Mediterranean Towards Climate Neutrality with the European Project CO2 PACMAN

At Elba with Schools to Understand and Imagine a Future of Complete Carbon Neutrality

Portoferraio, March 11, 2025 – Following the February events, the European project CO2 PACMAN (COoperation and CO-designing PArtnership for CliMAte Neutrality) returns to the Island of Elba to meet the students of the Raffaello Foresi High School, successfully concluding the cycle of activities planned for the third Rooting Lab of the Interreg Euro-Med project with the much-anticipated Youth Think Tank!

A heartfelt thank you to the school principal and teachers for their availability and enthusiasm in this fundamental phase of the project.

The 47 participating students showed great cooperation and proactivity towards the topics addressed, offering a new and fresh sense of hope for the future of the island.
The educational approach adopted was peer-to-peer, using play-based learning as a tool to facilitate the transfer and application of knowledge.

During the activities, students engaged in two interactive learning experiences:

🔹 Fish Game: A journey into resource management! This game highlighted how crucial it is to balance human consumption with nature’s ability to regenerate. Overshoot leads to ecosystem degradation, and once resources are depleted, restoration takes a long time.

🔹 COOL GAME: Learning through play. An educational board game, designed for the Youth Think Tank activity of the Rooting Lab, by the University of Siena and Florence, designed to spark reflection on how our daily actions impact the climate. Players explored strategies to reduce CO2 emissions, proving that every choice—big or small—matters in the fight against climate change. The biggest takeaway? Sustainability requires collective action. The future depends on the choices of citizens, communities, and policymakers. The ecological transition starts here!

There is great satisfaction for the attention and active participation shown in both activities, which have laid down roots – the key spirit of the Rooting Lab – that will continue to grow in collaboration with their teachers. This journey will lead students to take center stage in the next workshop, The Island I Would Like, where their aspirations and concrete decarbonization proposals, developed with the direct involvement of the local community, will take shape

The first phase of the Youth Think Tank can now be considered a success: the goal of conveying the key concepts of sustainability and decarbonization processes has been achieved, providing students with the necessary tools to develop critical and innovative thinking for the future of the island.
